Have y’all heard about pet poop DNA testing? According to a recent study from PetScreening.com and J. Turner Research, 84% of multifamily tenants reported pet waste as their top concern.

Corporate multifamily complexes have been using services to identify chronic wayward poopers, which helps reduce the amount of waste on your rental’s lawn by enabling you to enforce your pet pick-up policies. The most affordable pet poop DNA testing service starts around $35 per sample.

Does this reflect your experience with pet waste on property? Would you pass the cost to your tenants?

I assume the desired way of disposing of poop is outlined in the lease? I would make sure that’s crystal clear, and then if there’s an issue with dog poop all over the place then I’d start testing and fining dog owners.

I mean, it sounds silly but it can be really gross and frustrating. Nothing like stepping on some dog doo to start your day.

I have not heard about this! So how would it work? Before a tenant with a dog moves in, would you collect a sample of their dog’s DNA (using a cheek swab or whatever) and then test the offending nuggets as they appear? Sounds like it could get pricey, and charging every tenant with a dog might ruffle some feathers, especially if their dog’s DNA never appears.
